Esports athlete David Jones Masiye has been nominated in the Junior Male Sportsperson of the Year category at the Malawi Sport Awards 2025, set to take place on Saturday, 28 February, at the Sunbird Livingstonia International Conference Centre in Salima.

Masiye made a memorable debut on the international stage in 2025, proudly representing Malawi after earning his place through the national qualifiers for the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games. The tournament was held in Windhoek, Namibia, bringing together top young athletes from across Southern Africa to compete at the highest level.

Competing in the men’s eFootball category, Masiye delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament, ultimately securing a historic Gold medal for Malawi. In the final stages, he defeated Namibia’s Gerson Neumbo with a convincing 2–0 scoreline and went on to put up a dominant display against Zimbabwe’s Deardays Dumbu, sealing an impressive 3–1 victory to claim the championship.

His triumph not only marked a personal milestone but also signaled a breakthrough moment for Esports in Malawi. By standing on the podium alongside traditional sporting disciplines, Masiye demonstrated that competitive gaming is a legitimate and high-performance sport requiring discipline, strategic thinking, mental resilience, and technical mastery.

His nomination at the Malawi Sport Awards is therefore more than individual recognition such it represents growing institutional acknowledgment of Esports as part of Malawi’s national sporting landscape. For young digital athletes across the country, this milestone opens doors to greater support, sponsorship opportunities, structured development pathways, and increased public respect.
